Course description:
Study of principles and strategies in translation, focusing on problems and solutions in translation and practice on translating sentence and paragraph both in English into Thai and Thai into English. (Basic Translation)
Translating sentences and short stories from source texts in Englsih and Thai; applying translation techinques and strategies, study translation problems and solutions and practice in editing and rewriting the target texts. (Introduction to Translation)
Methods of instruction: tutorial and practice
Since translation skill can only be mastered by practice, students are supposed to practice and do a lot of translation exercises. The course will introduce students to the basic theory of translation. Students are required to work individually, work in pairs and groups in class so that they can discuss among themselves the way to translate certain pieces of writing. The teacher will guide, monitor and give feedback for their assignments.

Somboon's basic translation 
1.WAGE
The man clock off and come back home late who was very tiredness. He saw his son 5-years old who was waiting for him in front of the door.
Son : ” Dad,may i ask you 1 question. ”
Dad : ” what’s your question. ”
Son : ” How much do you get wage per hour? ”
Dad : ” It’s not your business,why do you ask me like this? ” answered angry dad.
Son : ” I really want to know,please tell me. How much do you get wage per hour? ” the son said request.
Dad : ” If you need to know it,it’s 20 $/hr. ”
Son : ” Oh!… ” He exclaimed and said with his dad.
” Dad,may I borrow you 10 $?
The angry father said back
Dad : ” this is your reason for getting my money to buy your stupid toy. Go to bed now and think about it.
I have to work hard several hour every day and don’t have time for think child reason.
A little boy is quieted and go to bed topic and closed the door. The father set down was still angry with his son’s question. Why did he ask this question for getting money. After about an hour, he is calm down and begin to did he do with his son. He may need to use 10 $ and he is hardly ask for money and walked to his son’s bedroom. Then, open the door and get in.
Dad : ” Do you sleep? ”
Son : ” No, i don’t. ”
Dad : ” I have thought. I do something wrong with you.”
” It’s so long that we don’t spend time together.”
” Here is your 10 $ that you ask for.”
The little boy set on the bed and said ” Thank you,Dad. ”
After that, he pick up something below his pillow and took some money and he’s slow count it.
The man saw that just angry again.
Dad : ” You have money but why do you borrow? ”
Son : ” Because I have money not enough but now it’s enough for me.”
” Dad, now I have money 20 $. May I want to buy 1 his father’s hour. ”
” Tomorrow, you just came back home very quickly. I want to have dinner with you. “
12. ” Well, everyone,” Mr. Summer said, ” that was done pretty fast, and now we’ve got to be hurrying a little more to get done in time.” He consulted his next list. ” Bill, ” he said, ” you draw for the Hutchinson family. You got any other households in the Hutchinsons? ”
” There’s Don and Eva, ” Mrs.Hutchinson yelled. ” Make them take their chance! ”
” Daughters draw with their husbands’ families,Tessie, ” Mr.Summers said gently. ” You know that as well as anyone else. ”
” It wasn’t fair, ” Tessie said.
” I guess not, Joe. ” Bill Hutchinson said regretfully. ” My daughter draws with her husband’s family; that’s only fair. And I’ve got no other family except the kids. ”
” Then, as far as drawing for families is concerned, it’s you, ” Mr.Summers said in explanation, “and as far as drawing for households is concerned, that’s you, too. Right? ”
” Right, ” Bill Hutchinson said.
” How many kids, Bill? ” Mr. Summers asked formally.

8. The Horse, Hunter and Stag
A quarrel had arisen between the Horse and the Stag, so the Horse came to a Hunter to ask his help to take revenge on the Stag. The Hunter agreed, but said: “If you desire to conquer the Stag, you must permit me to place this piece of iron between your jaws, so that I may guide you with these reins, and allow this saddle to be placed upon your back so that I may keep steady upon you as we follow after the enemy.” The Horse agreed to the conditions, and the Hunter soon saddled and bridled him. Then with the aid of the Hunter the Horse soon overcame the Stag, and said to the Hunter: “Now, get off, and remove those things from my mouth and back.”
“Not so fast, friend,” said the Hunter. “I have now got you under bit and spur, and prefer to keep you as you are at present.”
If you allow men to use you for your own purpose, they will use you for theirs.

The Rat Princess
Once upon a time, there was a Rat Princess, who lived with her father, the Rat King, and her mother, the Rat Queen, in a ricefield in far away Japan. The Rat Princess was so pretty that her father and mother were quite foolishly proud of her, and thought no one good enough to play with her. When she grew up, they would not let any of the rat princes come to visit her, and they decided at last that no one should marry her till they had found the most powerful person in the whole world; no one else was good enough. And the Father Rat started out to find the most powerful person in the whole world. The wisest and oldest rat in the ricefield said that the Sun must be the most powerful person, because he made the rice grow and ripen; so the Rat King went to find the Sun. He climbed up the highest mountain, ran up the path of a rainbow, and travelled and travelled across the sky till he came to the Sun’s house.
“What do you want, little brother?” the Sun said, when he saw him.
“I come,” said the Rat King, very importantly, “to offer you the hand of my daughter, the princess, because you are the most powerful person in the world; no one else is good enough.”
“Ha, ha!” laughed the jolly round Sun, and winked with his eye. “You are very kind, little brother, but if that is the case the princess is not for me; the Cloud is more powerful than I am; when he passes over me I cannot shine.”
“Oh, indeed,” said the Rat King, “then you are not my man at all”; and he left the Sun without more words. The Sun laughed and winked to himself. And the Rat King travelled and travelled across the sky till he came to the Cloud’s house.
“What do you want, little brother?” sighed the Cloud when he saw him.
“I come to offer you the hand of my daughter, the princess,” said the Rat King, “because you are the most powerful person in the world; the Sun said so, and no one else is good enough.”
The Cloud sighed again. “I am not the most powerful person,” he said; “the Wind is stronger than I,–when he blows, I have to go wherever he sends me.”
“Then you are not the person for my daughter,” said the Rat King proudly; and he started at once to find the Wind. He travelled and travelled across the sky, till he came at last to the Wind’s house, at the very edge of the world.
When the Wind saw him coming he laughed a big, gusty laugh, “Ho, ho!” and asked him what he wanted; and when the Rat King told him that he had come to offer him the Rat Princess’s hand because he was the most powerful person in the world, the Wind shouted a great gusty shout, and said, “No, no, I am not the strongest; the Wall that man has made is stronger than I; I cannot make him move, with all my blowing; go to the Wall, little brother!”
