Class period: 3 hours a week
Course description:
Study of principles and strategies in translation, focusing on problems and solutions in translation and practice on translating sentence and paragraph both in English into Thai and Thai into English. (Basic Translation)
Translating sentences and short stories from source texts in Englsih and Thai; applying translation techinques and strategies, study translation problems and solutions and practice in editing and rewriting the target texts. (Introduction to Translation)
Methods of instruction: tutorial and practice
Since translation skill can only be mastered by practice, students are supposed to practice and do a lot of translation exercises. The course will introduce students to the basic theory of translation. Students are required to work individually, work in pairs and groups in class so that they can discuss among themselves the way to translate certain pieces of writing. The teacher will guide, monitor and give feedback for their assignments.

The Boys and the Frogs
“Let us go to the pond and have some fun,” said George.
“What fun can we have there?” asked Frank. “The pond is nothing but an old mudhole. We can not swim in such water.”
Down at the pond the sun shone warm, and an old mother frog and her children were sunning themselves on a log. Now and then one plunged into the water with a chug! and then crawled out on the bank.
That was a happy time in frog land.
In the midst of their play, they heard a sound which made the mother frog tremble. It was only a boy’s laugh, but as soon as the mother heard it she said, “Into the water, every one of you. The giants are coming;” and they all jumped into the water.
The giants had armed themselves with pebbles. Each one had a pocketful. As soon as they caught sight of the frogs, they cried, “Now for some fun!”
Before the mother frog could reach the water, a stone hit her on one of her feet. The one-sided battle had begun.
Every time a little frog peeped out of the water to get a breath of air or to look at the two giants, whiz! flew a pebble right toward it, and it never cared to look at its enemies again.
The mother became very angry. She lifted her head boldly above the water.
“Cowards!” she cried. “If we could sting, would you fight us? If we could bite, would you be here? You have great sport tormenting us, because we cannot fight for ourselves. You are cowards! cowards!”
And all the little frogs echoed, “Cowards! cowards!”

“เราจะไปที่บ่อน้ำกันและมันคงน่าจะสนุก,”จอร์จพูด.
“พวกเราจะทำอะไรที่นั่นล่ะ?”แฟรงค์ถาม.”บ่อน้ำนั้นไม่มีอะไรเลยมีแต่หลุมโคลนเก่าๆ.เราไม่สามารถว่ายน้ำในนั้นได้หรอก.”
แสงแดดที่อบอุ่นสาดส่องลงไปที่บ่อน้ำ,และในนั้นมีแม่กบแก่ๆและลูกของมันนอนอาบแดดตัวมันอยู่ที่ท่อนซุ่ง.ในบางครั้งมันก็จะกระโดดลงไปในน้ำเสียงดังชักๆ! และจากนั้นมันก็คลานออกไปยังตลิ่ง.
มันเป็นเวลาที่มีความสุขในพื้นที่ของมัน.

ยักษ์เหล่านั้นมีอาวุธติดที่ตัวของมันพร้อมด้วยก้อนกรวด.แต่ละคนมีกระเป๋าพกเล็กๆติดอยู่ด้วย.เมื่่อพวกเขาทั้งหลายจับตามองไปที่แม่กบ,พวกมันก็ตะโกนขึ้นว่า,”ตอนนี้สนุกดีจังเนอะ! ”

แม่กบเริ่มเปลี่ยนเป็นโกรธมาก.มันยกหัวของมันขึ้นมาเด่นเหนือน้ำ.
“คนขี้ขลาด! “มันตะโกน.”ถ้าพวกเราสามารถต่อยได้,คุณจะสู้กับพวกเราไหม?ถ้าพวกเรากัดคุณได้,คุณจะไปจากตรงนี้ไหม?คุณมีกีฬาที่ดีกว่าการที่จะมาก่อกวนพวกเราซะอีก,เพราะว่าเราไม่สามารถที่จะต่อสู้ได้ด้วยตัวของพวกเราเอง.คุณมันคนขี้ขลาด! คนขี้ขลาด! ”
และพวกกบตัวเล้กๆทั้งหมดก็ส่งเสียงตะโกนตาม,”คนขี้ขลาด!คนขี้ขลาด! “.
เงินค่าจ้าง
ชายหนุ่มเลิกงานและกลับเข้าบ้านช้า ด้วยความเหน็ดเหนื่อยอ่อนล้า และพบว่าลูกชายวัย 5 ขวบ รอคุณพ่ออยู่ที่หน้าประตู
ลูก: “พ่อครับ , พ่อ ผมมีคำถาม ถามพ่อข้อนึง”
พ่อ : “ว่ามาสิลูก, อะไรเหรอ”
ลูก: “พ่อทำงาน ได้ชั่วโมงละเท่าไรครับ”
พ่อ : “ไม่ใช่โกงการอะไรของลูกนี่ , ทำไมถามอย่างนี้”พ่อตอบด้วยความโมโห
ลูก: “ผมอยากรู้จริงๆ โปรดบอกผมเถอะ พ่อทำงาน ได้ชั่วโมงละเท่าไหร่ ”
ลูกพูดขอร้อง
พ่อ : “ถ้าจำเป็นจะต้องรู้ละก็ พ่อได้ชั่วโมงละ 20 เหรียญ”
ลูก: “โอ..” ลูกอุทาน แล้วคอตก พูดกับพ่ออีกครั้ง “พ่อครับ ผมอยากขอยืมเงิน 10 เหรียญครับ”
พ่อกล่าวด้วยอารมณ์ “นี่เป็นเหตุผลที่แกถาม เพื่อจะขอเงินแล้วไปซื้อของเล่นโง่ๆ อะไรที่ไม่เข้าท่าหรอกเหรอ รีบขึ้นไปนอนเลยนะ แล้วลองคิดดูว่า แกเห็นแก่ตัวมาก ฉันทำงานหนักหลายๆชั่วโมงทุกวัน และไม่มีเวลาสำหรับเรื่องเด็กๆ ไร้สาระอย่างนี้หรอก”
เด็กน้อยเงียบลง เดินไปที่ห้องนอนแล้วปิดประตู
ชายหนุ่มนั่งลงและยังโกรธอยู่กับคำถามของลูกชาย เขากล้าที่จะถามคำถามนั้นเพื่อจะขอเงินได้อย่างไร แต่พอหลังจากนั้นเกือบชั่วโมง อารมณ์ของชายหนุ่มก็เริ่มสงบลง และเริ่มคิดถึงสิ่งที่ทำลงไปกับลูกชายตัวน้อย บางทีเขาอาจจำเป็นต้องใช้เงิน 10 เหรียญ นั้นจริงๆ และลูกไม่ได้ขอเงินเขาบ่อยนัก ชายหนุ่มจึงเดินขึ้นไปบนห้องนอนลูกแล้วเปิดประตูเข้าไป
พ่อ : “หลับหรือยัง ลูก,”
ลูก: “ยังครับ”
พ่อ : “พ่อมาคิดดู เมื่อกี้พ่ออาจทำรุนแรงกับลูกเกินไป”
“นานแล้วนะ ที่พ่อไม่ได้คลุกคลีกับลูก ,เอ้า นี่เงิน 10 เหรียญที่ลูกขอ”
เด็กน้อยลุกขึ้นนั่ง “ขอบคุณครับพ่อ” ว่าแล้วก็ล้วงลงไปใต้หมอน หยิบเงินจำนวนหนึ่งออกมา แล้วนับช้าๆ ชายหนุ่มเห็นดังนั้นก็โกรธขึ้นอีกครั้ง
“ก็มีเงินแล้วนี่ แล้วมาขอทำไมอีก”
ลูก: “เพราะผมมีเงินไม่พอครับ แต่ตอนนี้ ผมมีครบแล้ว”
“พ่อครับ ตอนนี้ผมมีเงินครบ 20 เหรียญแล้ว ผมขอซื้อเวลาพ่อชั่วโมงนึง” ..
“พรุ่งนี้ พ่อกลับบ้านเร็วๆนะครับ ผมอยากกินข้าวเย็นกับพ่อ”
After working, A young man get back home late with tiredness and fine that his son, who is five years ago, is waiting for him in front of the door.
son : ” Dad I have a question to ask you ”
Dad: All right. What is it?”
Son:” How much do you get per hour?”
Dad:” It is’t your business. Why do you ask about this ” say, that angrily.
Dad:” If you need to know. I get 20 dollar per hour.
Son:” Oh!” and he tell his father again ” I want to borrow your money 10 dollar.”
Dad:” This is reason that you ask me for money to buy the stupid toy. Go to bad now and rethink your are selfish, aren’t you. I work very hard several hours everyday and I don’t have time for thinking silly matter like this “say agrily,
The son is calm down, goes to bad and closes the door. The young man sits down and is still angry with son’s qeustion because he is bold to ask him, After an hour, the young man was calm down, and thought about some thing he has done with the son. The son might have to use 10 dollar because he hardly begs money, so he goes to son’s bedroom and opens the door.
Dad: “Are you sleeping?”
Son: No.
” I think I was too violent to you” dad say, ” long time, I was not familiar with you. Here is 10 dollar which you ask for”
The son wakes up.
Son: ” Thank you.” Than, he puts his hand under a pillow and picks some moneys, after that, he slowly counts the money. The young man is very angry again when he sees that.
Dad: ” You have the money. why do you ask more for some money with me?”
Son: ” Because I have not had enough money, but now I’ve got it all.”
” Dad, now I already have money $20. May I buy your time, an hour” “Tomorrow, can you get back home early? I want to have dinner with you.
13. The Cat and Venus
A CAT fell in love with a handsome young man, and entreated Venus to change her into the form of a woman. Venus consented to her request and transformed her into a beautiful damsel, so that the youth saw her and loved her, and took her home as his bride. While the two were reclining in their chamber, Venus wishing to discover if the Cat in her change of shape had also altered her habits of life, let down a mouse in the middle of the room. The Cat, quite forgetting her present condition, started up from the couch and pursued the mouse, wishing to eat it. Venus was much disappointed and again caused her to return to her former shape.
Nature exceeds nurture.

The matches fell from his hand and spilled in the passage. He stood motionless, his breath suspended until the knock was repeated. Then the turned and fled swiftly back to his room, and closed the door behind him. A third knock sounded through the house.
“WHAT THAT?” cried the old woman, starting up.

There was another knock, and another. the old woman with a sudden wrench broke free and ran from the room. Then the old woman voice, strained and panting.
“The bolt, “she cried loudly. Come down. I can’t reach it.”

But her husband was on his hands and knees grouping wildly on the floor in search of the paw.If only he could find it before the thing outside got in. He heard the creaking of the bolt as it came slowly back, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw , and frantically breathed his third and last wish.

The knocking ceased suddenly, although the echoes of it were still in the house. He heard the chir draw back, and the door opened . A cold wind rushed up the staircase, and a long loud wail of disappointment and misery from his wife gave him the courage to run down to her side, and then to the gate beyond. The streetlamp flickering opposite shone on a quiet and deserted road.

Reds applaud improved ties with Prem
Red shirt people have no problem with the government’s improved ties with Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, red shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan said yesterday.
Gen Prem, a target of red shirt attacks in recent years, met Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at a gala dinner at Government House on Friday.
Ms Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party are allies with the red shirts.
Mr Jatuporn, who is also a Pheu Thai Party list MP, said he regarded their meeting as “the beginning” of reconciliation.
Mr Jatuporn said the red shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) was unlikely to be upset by the signs of warmer ties. The UDD and its leaders rebuked Gen Prem partly out of a sense of duty.He said he did not have any personal conflicts with Gen Prem, and that the red shirts would not oppose any attempt to overcome social and political conflicts in the country.
Mr Jatuporn said acting UDD chairwoman Tida Tawornseth was likely to be elected as full chairwoman at a meeting on Wednesday. “Those rumours that certain UDD figures are disappointed in Mrs Tida are untrue,” he said.
However, Shinawat Haboonphard, an adviser to the transport minister and a UDD leader, said no one, including Mrs Tida, had clearly stated he or she would run for the position.
He said Mrs Tida should have listened more to the majority of the UDD.
In his view, she lacked calmness, a basic requirement of a good leader.
“We are in no rush to choose the chairman because if we get one who is not truly respected by the majority, he or she will become useless,” Mr Shinawat said.
Mr Jatuporn also dismissed rumours the UDD would ask for financial support from ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra at a gathering of the UDD which will be held at Khao Yai in Nakhon Ratchasima on Feb 25.
