Class period: 3 hours a week
Course description:
Study of principles and strategies in translation, focusing on problems and solutions in translation and practice on translating sentence and paragraph both in English into Thai and Thai into English. (Basic Translation)
Translating sentences and short stories from source texts in Englsih and Thai; applying translation techinques and strategies, study translation problems and solutions and practice in editing and rewriting the target texts. (Introduction to Translation)
Methods of instruction: tutorial and practice
Since translation skill can only be mastered by practice, students are supposed to practice and do a lot of translation exercises. The course will introduce students to the basic theory of translation. Students are required to work individually, work in pairs and groups in class so that they can discuss among themselves the way to translate certain pieces of writing. The teacher will guide, monitor and give feedback for their assignments.

A man came home from work late and he is tired. He found his 5-years old son waiting for him at the door.
Son: “Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
Dad: “Yes sure, what it is?
Son: “How much money you make an hour?”
Dad: “It’s not you business! Why do you ask a such thing?” Dad said angrily.
Son: “I want to know. Please tell me how much money you make an hour?”
Dad: “If you must know, I make $20 an hour”
Son: “Oh” he replied with his head down. He said to his father again.
“Dad, can I borrow you $10?”
The father was furious.
Dad: “If this only reason you asked that for buying a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you must straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are begin so selfish. I work hard for long hours everyday and I have no time for such childish behavior.”
The son quietly went to his room and closed the door. The father sat down and got
even angrier. How dare he ask this question only to get some money. After about an
hour , the father had clamed down, and started to think. Maybe he really needed to
buy $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The father went to the door of
the son’s room and opened the door.
Dad: “Are you asleep?”
Son: “No, I’m not.”
Dad: “I have been thinking, I was so violence to you, so long we are not together. Here’s the $10 you asked.”
The son got sitting
Son: “Thank you daddy.” Then, he was reaching under his pillow he pulled out some money up and slowly counted out money. The father was seeing that he started to get angry again.
Dad: “You already have some money why do you want more money?”
Son: “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do. Daddy I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

“ฉันคงน่าเวทนามากเลยทีเดียวถ้าไม่มีเพชร, อัญมณีต่างๆ ไว้สวมใส่ (เธอตอบเช่นนั้น)”
“ฉันคงรู้สึกแย่ที่สุดแล้วแหละหากไม่มีเลย มันเกือบจะทำให้ฉันไม่ได้ไปงานปาร์ตี้เลยนะ
“ใช้ดอกไม้แล้วกัน” (เขาบอก) “พวกเขาดูดีมากเลยนะในช่วงปีนี้ สำหรับเงิน10 ฟรังซ์นี้คุณควรจะได้รับดอกกุหลาบสักสองสามดอกนะ”
หล่อนไม่เคยมั่นใจเลย
“ไม่นะ ไม่มีใครดูถูกหลอกถึงจะดูจนในหมู่คนรวยก็เหอะ”
“คุณอย่าทำเป็นโง่ไปหน่อยเลย” หล่อนอุทานกับสามีของเธอ “ไปกันเหอะ ไปดูคุณนาย ฟอเรสเทียร์กันจะได้ถามหล่อนด้วยว่าขอยืมเครื่องเพชรหน่อยได้ไหม คุณก็รู้หนิว่าหล่อนน่าจะมีเพียงพอแล้ว”
หล่อนคงรู้สึกดีมากเลยทีเดียว
“จริงๆ นะ ไม่เคยรู้สึกแบบนี้เลย”
วันต่อมาหล่อนไปเห็นเพื่อนเลยไปถามเกี่ยวปัญหาของเพื่อนที่กำลังเจออยู่
คุณนาย ฟอเรสเทียร์ ก็ได้ไปหยิบกล่องขนาดใหญ่ใบหนึ่งที่โต๊ะเครื่องแป้งมาให้คุณนายหลุย แล้วก็เปิดมันแล้วจึงพูดออกมาว่า
“เอาอันนี้แหละ ที่รัก”
ในตอนแรก หล่อนเห็นกำไรข้อมือและเมื่อหล่อนได้เห็นสร้อยไข่มุกและเมื่อได้เห็นทองและพลอยที่มีสัญลักษณ์ของชาวเวนิชอยู่ ซื่งมีความงดงามมาก หล่อนพยายามที่จะลองสวมใส่แล้วดูกับกระจก จึงรู้สึกลังเลใจ ก็คงเป็นไปไม่ได้แน่ที่จะออกไปโดยไม่มีของเหล่านี้ ให้ฉันยืมหน่อยนะค่ะ (หล่อนถามต่อไปเรื่อยๆ)
“ไม่มีอีกแล้วหรอค่ะ”
“ใช่ ดูอันที่เหมาะกับตัวคุณเองแล้วกันเพราะฉันไม่รู้หรอกว่าอันไหนจะเหมะกับคุณที่สุด”
ท้ายที่สุด เธอก็ได้พบ ผ้าแพรสีดำ สร้อยเพชร หัวใจเธอเริ่มเต้นดัง โลภมากอยากได้หมด เมื่อจะหยิบจับอะไรมือก็สั่นมาก หล่อนนำมาสวมคออย่างรวดเร็วและเมื่อได้สวมเสื้อตัวนั้นทำให้หล่อนรู้สึกปราบปลื้มเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
THE KING WHO WOULD HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WIFE พระราชาที่มีภรรยาที่สวยที่สุด
FIFTY years ago there lived a king who was very anxious to get married;
เมื่อห้าสิบปีที่ผ่านมามีพระราชาองค์หนึ่งซึ่งมีความกังวลพระทัยยิ่งนักที่จะต้องเข้าพิธีอภิเษกสมรส
but, as he was quite determined that his wife should be as beautiful as. the sun,
แต่แล้วพระองค์ก็ได้ตัดสินพระทัยอย่างแน่วแน่ว่าผู้ใดที่จะมาเป็นภรรยาของพระองค์จะต้องเป็นสุภาพสตรีที่เปรียมไปด้วยความสวยสดงดงามหาที่เปรียบมิได้
the thing was not so easy as it seemed, for no maiden came up to his standard.
แต่แล้วสิ่งเหล่านี้ก็ไม่ได้เป็นไปอย่างที่คิด พระองค์จึงต้องการใครสักคนที่ไม่มีความชื่นชมในสิ่งที่พระองค์เป็น
Then he commanded a trusty servant to search through the length and breadth of the land till he found a girl fair enough to be queen, and if he had the good luck to discover one he was to bring her back with him.
ว่าแล้วพระองค์ก็มีพระราชองค์การรับสั่งให้องครักษ์ออกตามหาหญิงสาวทั่วราชอาณาจักรผู้ใดที่มีคุณสมบัติเพียบพร้อม ให้ออกค้นหาจนกว่าเขาจะพบผู้หญิงซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติเหมาะสมที่จะมาเป็นพระราชินีและถ้าเขาโชคดีเขาเจอใครสักคนแล้วพาเธอกลับไปกับเขาให้ได้
The servant set out at once on his journey, and sought high and low-in castles and cottages;
องครักษ์ได้เริ่มออกเดินทางตามหาอีกครั้งหนึ่งไม่ว่าจะเป็นในปราสาทอันสูงส่งหรือแม้แต่ในกระท่อมโทรมๆ
but though pretty maidens were plentiful as blackberries, he felt sure that none of them would please the king.
แต่ถึงแม้ว่าหญิงสาวผู้น่ารักคนนั้นจะมีผลลูกแบลกเบอรี่เป็นจำนวนมากแต่เขาก็รู้สึกได้ว่าผลแบลกเบอรี่เหล่านั้นไม่ได้เป็นของพระราชา
One day he had wandered far and wide, and was feeling very tired and thirsty. By the roadside stood a tiny little house, and here he knocked and asked for a cup of water.
วันหนึ่งเขาได้หลงทางเข้าไปในที่แสนไกลอันกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล เขาก็รู้สึกเหนื่อยล้าและกระหายน้ำเป็นอย่างมาก เขายืนอยู่ริมถนนและมองเห็นบ้านหลังเล็กๆหลังหนึ่งทันใดนั้นเขาก็ได้ไปยืนอยู่ด้านหน้าของบ้านหลังนี้ เขาเริ่มเคาะประตูบ้านเพื่อหวังจะขอน้ำดื่มสักแก้วหนึ่ง
Now in this house dwelt two sisters, and one was eighty and the other ninety years old. They were very poor, and earned their living by spinning. This had kept their hands very soft and white, like the hands of a girl, and when the water was passed through the lattice, and the servant saw the small, delicate fingers, he said to himself: “A maiden must indeed be lovely if she has a hand like that.” And he made haste back, and told the king.
บ้านหลังนี้เป็นของคนแคระสองพี่น้องซึ่งเป็นหญิงชราคนหนึ่งมีอายุ 80 ปี และอีกคนอายุ 90 ปี หญิงชราทั้งสองยากจนเป็นอย่างมากพวกหร่อนหาเลี้ยงตนเองด้วยการปั่นด้าย นี่จึงทำให้มือของพวกหร่อนทั้งนุ่มและขาวราวอย่างมือของเด็กสาวและเมื่อน้ำได้ไหลผ่านไม้เขาพบเห็นบางสิ่งเล็กๆนั้นคือนิ้วมืออันอ่อนช้อย เขาพูดกับตัวเองว่า “ หญิงสาวที่เขาตามหาต้องมีลักษณะมือแบบนี้อย่างแน่นอน” เขารีบเดินทางกลับประปราสาทอย่างรวดเร็วเพื่อจะทูลกล่าวต่อพระราชา
“Go back at once,” said his majesty, “and try to get a sight of her.”
“กลับไปที่นั่นอีกครั้ง” พระราชาตรัส “และพยายามดูว่าเธอเป็นคนอย่างไร”
The faithful servant departed on his errand without losing any time, and again he knocked at the door of the little house and begged for some water. As before, the old woman did not open the door, but passed the water through the lattice.
องครักษ์ผู้ซื่อสัตย์ได้รีบเดินทางกลับไปอย่างรวดเร็วเพื่อไม่ให้เป็นการเสียเวลาและเขาก็เคาะประตูที่หน้าบ้านหลังเดิมและเอยกล่าวขอน้ำดื่มเมื่อครั้งก่อนที่เขาเคยทำ แต่ทว่าหญิงชราก็ไม่ยอมเปิดประตูแต่พลาดทางไม้เพื่อส่งน้ำออกมาแทน
“Do you live here alone?” asked the man.
“เจ้าอยู่ที่นี่คนเดียวเหรอ” เขาถามเธอ
“No,” replied she, “my sister lives with me. We are poor girls, and have to work for our bread.”
“ไม่” เธอตอบ, “เราอยู่กับพี่สาว เราสองพี่น้องเป็นเด็กยากจนเราต้องทำงานเพื่อแลกกับอาหาร”
“How old are you?”
“ เจ้าอายุเท่าไร”
“I am fifteen, and she is twenty.”
“ฉันอายุ 15 และส่วนพี่ของฉันอายุ 20 ”
Then the servant went back to the king, and told him all he knew. And his majesty answered: “I will have the fifteen-year-old one. Go and bring her here.”
หลังจากนั้นองครักษ์ได้เดินทางกลับไปหาพระราชาและเพื่อทูลพระองค์ พระราชาตรัส “เราจะเป็นคนนำเด็กสาวคนนั้นกลับมาที่นี่เอง”
The servant returned a third time to the little house, and knocked at the door. In reply to his knock the lattice window was pushed open, and a voice inquired what it was he wanted.
เป็นครั้งที่ 3 แล้วที่องครักษ์ผู้ซื่อสัตย์ได้เดินทางกลับมาที่บ้านหลังเล็กนี้ เขาเคาะที่ประตูหน้าบ้านแล้วจู่ๆหน้าต่างไม้ก็ถูกผลักออกพร้อมกับคำถามว่าเขาต้องการอะไร
“The king has desired me to bring back the youngest of you to become his queen,” he replied.
“พระราชาทรงพอพระทัยที่จะพาท่านกลับไปที่ปราสาทเพื่อไปเป็นพระราชินี” องครักษ์ตอบ
“Tell his majesty I am ready to do his bidding, but since my birth no ray of light has fallen upon my face. If it should ever do so I shall instantly grow black. Therefore beg, I pray you, his most gracious majesty to send this evening a shut carriage, and I will return in it to the castle.
“บอกพระราชาของท่านได้แล้วว่าเราพร้อมให้ประมูลแล้ว วันที่เราเกิดเป็นวันที่ดีที่สุดในชีวิตของเราแต่แล้วชีวิตก็เปลี่ยนไป ดังนั้นเราจึงอ้อนวอนต่อพระราชาด้วยความเมตตาของพระองค์ส่งข้าวของให้ภายในคืนนี้และเราเราจะส่งทุกอย่างกลับไปที่ปราสาทเหมือนเดิม
When the king heard this he ordered his great golden carriage to be prepared, and in it to be placed some magnificent robes; and the old woman wrapped herself in a thick veil, and was driven to the castle.
เมื่อพระราชาได้ยินอย่างน้นก็มีรับสั่งให้รีบเตรียมหาทองเนื้อดีและหาชุดสวยสง่าสำหรับสุภาพสตรี; หญิงชรามัดผ้าคลุมหน้ากับตัวเธออย่างหนาแน่นและหญิงชราก็ของทางเดินทางไปยังปราสาท
The king was eagerly awaiting her, and when she arrived he begged her politely to raise her veil and let him see her face.
พระราชารอเธออย่างกระวนกระวายและเมื่อเธอมาถึงพระราชาได้อ้อนวอนนางอย่างสุภาพให้นางเปิดผ้าคลุมหน้าออกเพื่อจะทำให้เขาเห็นหน้าของนาง
But she answered: “Here the tapers are too bright and the light too strong. Would you have me turn black under your very eyes?”
แต่นางกลับตอบว่า “ที่นี่มีแสงอย่างจัดจ้านเกินไป พระองค์จะมีหม่อมฉันโดยที่พระองค์ไม่ต้องทอดพระเนตรได้ไหม”
And the king believed her words, and the marriage took place without the veil being once lifted. Afterwards, when they were alone, he raised the corner, and knew for the first time that he had wedded a wrinkled old woman. And, in a furious burst of anger, he dashed open the window and flung her out. But, luckily for her, her clothes caught on a nail in the wall, and kept her hanging between heaven and earth.
พระราชาเชื่อในคำพูดของนางและอภิเษกสมรสโดยที่ไม่มีการเปิดผ้าคลุมหน้า ต่อมาเมื่อทั้งคู่ได้อยู่กันเพียงตามลำพังพระราชารู้สึกได้ถึงลอยเหี่ยวย่นจนหญิงสาวเขาก็รู้ได้ในทันทีว่าเขาเพิ่งผ่านการแต่งงานกับหญิงชรา
เขาโกรธจัดและระเบิดความโกรธโดยการผลักหน้าต่างออกอย่างแรงจนเกิดเสียงดังขึ้นและเหวี่ยงนางออกไปด้านนอก แต่ด้วยความโชคดีของนาง นางลอยไปติดอยู่กับกำแพงโดยที่ชุดของเธอเกี่ยวอยู่กับตะปูจึงทำให้นางลอยอยู่ราวนางฟ้า
While she was thus suspended, expecting every moment to be dashed to the ground, four fairies happened to pass by.
ขณะตอนที่นางลอยอยู่กลางอากาศ นางได้คิดอยู่ตลอดเวลาว่าขอให้พรจากนางฟ้า 4 ข้อจงบังเกิดขึ้น ก่อนที่นางจะตกลงกระแทกพื้น
“Look, sisters,” cried one, “surely that is the old woman that the king sent for. Shall we wish that her clothes may give way, and that she should be dashed to the ground?” “Oh no! no!” exclaimed another. “Let us wish her something good. I myself will wish her youth.”
“ระวัง” คนกำลังไห้ “ แน่นอนนั่นคือคนที่พระราชาส่งมาและเราหวังว่าชุดนางอาจจะติดหรือนางควรจะตกลงพื้น” “ โอ้ ไม่นะ” เสียงร้องอุทานจากใครคนหนึ่ง “กรุณาให้พวกเราอธิฐานสิ่งดีๆบางอย่างให้กับนาง ฉัน ตัวฉัน จะขอให้นางเป็นเด็กสาว”
“And I beauty.”
“และฉันเป็นคนสวย”
“And I wisdom.”
“และฉันเป็นคนมีสติปัญญา
“And I a tender heart.”
“และขอให้ฉันมีหัวใจที่อ่อนโยน”
So spoke the fairies, and went their way, leaving the most beautiful maiden in the world behind them.
นางพูดกับเหล่านางฟ้าและในระหว่างทางของเหล่านางฟ้าได้ทิ้งหญิงสาวผู้หนึ่งที่สวยที่สุดในโลกไว้ขางหลังพวกนางฟ้า
The next morning when the king looked from his window he saw this lovely creature hanging on the nail. “Ah! what have I done? Surely I must have been blind last night!”
เช้าวันต่อมาเมื่อพระราชาทอดพระเนตรออกทางหน้าต่างก็พบกับหญิงสาวที่งดงามห้อยติดอยู่บนกำแพง “ อ้า ข้าทำอะไรลงไป เมื่อคืนนี้ข้าต้องตาบอดไปแน่ๆ”
And he ordered long ladders to be brought and the maiden to be rescued. Then he fell on his knees before her, and prayed her to forgive him, and a great feast was made in her honor.
พระราชาทรงสั่งให้นำบรรไดมาเพื่อพาตัวนางลงมาหลังจากเขานั่งคุกต่อหน้านางและอร้องให้นางอภัยให้กับเขาและจะจัดงานเลี้ยงใหญ่โตเพื่อเป็นเกรียติให้กับนาง
Some days after came the ninety-year-old sister to the palace and asked for the queen.
หลายวันต่อมาได้มีหญิงชราเดินทางมาที่ปราสาทแล้วถามถึงพระราชินี
“Who is that hideous old witch?” said the king
“แม่มดที่น่ารังเกียจคนนี้เป็นใครกัน” พระราชาตรัส
“Oh, an old neighbor of mine, who is half silly,” she replied.
“โอ้,นางเป็นเพื่อนบ้านของเราเอง,นางค่อนข้างสติไม่ดี” นางตอบ
But the old woman looked at her steadily, and knew her again, and said: “How have you managed to grow so young and beautiful? I should like to be young and beautiful too.”
แต่หญิงชรากับจองมองพระราชินีอย่างแน่วแน่และนางก็รับรู้ว่าพระราชินีคือใคร นางกล่าว “ เจ้าทำอย่างไรให้เติบโตมาแล้วยังดูเด็กและสาวงาม? เราควรจะเด็กและสวยเหมือนกัน”
This question she repeated the whole day long, till at length the queen lost patience and said: “I had my old head cut off, and this new head grew in its place.”
นางนึกถึงแต่คำถามนี้ซึ่งวนไปวนมาอยู่ในหัวของนางตลอดทั้งวัน จนกระทั่งพระราชินีหมดความอดทนกับคำถามนี้ นางจึงตอบไปว่า “ เราได้ตัดหัวของเราออกและนี่คือหัวใหม่ที่งอกออกมาแทน”
Then the old woman went to a barber, and spoke to him, saying, “I will give you all you ask if you will only cut off my head, so that I may become young and lovely.”
หลังจากนั้นหญิงชราได้ไปร้านตัดผมและบอกกับช่างว่าเราจะตอบทุกอย่างที่ท่านถาม ท่านแค่ตัดหัวเราออกแล้วเราจะไก้กลายเป็นหญิงสาวที่น่ารัก”
“But, my good woman, if I do that you will die!”
“ แต่ทว่าท่านหญิงถ้าเราทำนั่นท่านจะตายได้นะ”
But the old woman would listen to nothing; and at last the barber took out his knife and struck the first blow at her neck.
แต่หญิงชราไม่ฟังอะไรทั้งสิ้น หลังจากช่างตัดผมได้นำมีดออกมาและเริ่มกรีดลงที่คอของนาง
“Ah!” she shrieked as she felt the pain.
“อ้า!” นางส่งเสียงแหลมและดังเพราะนางรู้สึกถึงความเจ็บปวด
Il faul souffrir pour titre belle,” said the barber, who had been in France.
And at the second blow her head rolled off, and the old woman was dead for good and all.
เขาต้องทนทุกข์ทรมานเพื่อให้ที่ดีเช่นช่างตัดผมพูดผู้ที่เคยอาศัยอยู่ในฝรั่งเศส
เวลาต่อมาหัวของนางก็หลุดและกลิ้งลงพื้นและหญิงชราก็ได้ตายลงในที่สุด
The Mother and the Wolf ( แม่กับหมาป่า )
A FAMISHED WOLF was prowling about in the morning in search of food. As he passed the door of a cottage built in the forest, he heard a Mother say to her child, “Be quiet, or I will throw you out of the window, and the Wolf shall eat you.” The Wolf sat all day waiting at the door. In the evening he heard the same woman fondling her child and saying: “You are quiet now, and if the Wolf should come, we will kill him.” The Wolf, hearing these words, went home, gasping with cold and hunger. When he reached his den, Mistress Wolf inquired of him why he returned wearied and supperless, so contrary to his wont. He replied: “Why, forsooth! use I gave credence to the words of a woman!”

Milan bid to end jinx against English clubs
Milan : Thierry Henry will be looking to give the club he loves a farewell gift as he makes his final appearance for Arsenal against AC Milan in the champions League today.
Henry’s second spell at the London club is set to come to an emotional end tomorrow when he will return to the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.
